Wausau values the success of your business.  The City has a long track record of public-private partnerships for development and has led, developed and/or supported various efforts to assist small businesses including:

  • 1,000+ acre Wausau Business Campus- the largest employment center in the region- and the only Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation certified ‘shovel ready’ industrial site in Marathon County.  Sites for businesses of all sizes are available, just contact our office.
  • 62 City Assistance public-private partnership development agreements supporting over 100 local businesses through grants, loans and infrastructure improvements for expansion- often with a public participation of 10% of total investment.
  • 700 direct new jobs, mostly in high wage manufacturing sectors, directly tied to the City's assistance. 
  • 12 Tax Increment Financing Districts- with 9 current active districts and 9.26% of the City’s taxable land valuation in a TIF district.
  • $2.2mil+ in small business loans in partnership with the MCDEVCO.
  • $4.5mil+ investment in the establishment and operations of our full time staffed incubator and entrepreneurial support programming at the Wausau Entrepreneurial and Education Center.
  • $17mil+ across over 1,550 Wausau Community Development program loans to businesses and redevelopment projects (commercial rehabilitation [21 projects], rental rehab [823 units], homeowner rehab [800 homes], and down payment assistance [432 homes]).
  • Longstanding partnership with the resources of the Hmong Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce, including their regional office based in Wausau.
  • Ongoing collaboration with our Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UW-Stevens Point offering no cost, confidential advising and resources as well as fee based workshops/conferences to both startup and existing businesses.
  • Redevelopment projects have included: Marathon Rubber, Wausau Center, Washington Square/Jefferson Street Inn, East Riverfront (Hammerblow/Cloverbelt Industries), Westside Battery, Wausau Club, Sav-O Supply, Riverside Place, Dudley Tower, Grand Ave Kwik Trip, Wausau World Market, 400 Block, Parkway 52, Stewart Ave, Sherman St, Thomas St, Westwood Drive/Rasmussen College, U&K Interchange, Roets Property, Rosemurgy Relocation, North Riverfront (Wausau Chemical/Great Lakes Cheese), Old Grand Ave Kmart, Old Wausau East Highschool, 703 Fulton Street, 1408 Bissell Street, Eastbay Sports Complex/Curling Way, Medical College of Wisconsin, and construction of 14 in-fill new houses.
